So, you’ve got a cat and a dog and the greedy dog really likes to go to town on that cat’s food which, naturally, irritates the kitty.
I really love it when dogs and cats become friends over time and cuddle while they both sleep—that’s a really precious thing which you need to cherish. After all, what’s better than two animals loving each other!?
But, should you let your dog help himself to some cat food?
In this blog post, I will answer the question, “Can dogs eat cat food?” in as much detail as I possibly can.
So, what are you waiting for!?
Let’s begin.
Can Dogs Eat Cat food?: The Simple Answer
Did you know that cat and dog food isn’t really made in the same factory? That the ingredients are actually quite different for both the animals?
You should not feed your dog cat food as it is designed to meet the needs of cats and so, has completely different proportions of nutrients.
So, this means that your puppy scarfing down your cat’s food would no really piss your cat off, it would also not provide adequate nutrition to your doggy.
Dogs may not necessarily get sick after having cat food but, sharing of food should be avoided as much as possible—or else, you’ll have to keep an eye on your dog all the time when feeding your cat!
So, the bottom line is that cat food is designed for the nutritional needs of a completely different species.
It will fill your dog’s tummy up (and piss your kitty off) but, it won’t provide him with the right nutrition.
Differences: Cat vs Dog Foods
Cats and dogs belong to completely different species and unlike popular belief, cat food and dog food is actually very different.
In this section, I’ll go through some differences between cat food and dog food.
Let’s take a peek:
- Cat foods contain a large amount of meat, however, the quantity of meat present in cat food is far too high to be suitable for dogs as they need a balance between protein and carbohydrates
- Cat food is simply designed to fulfill the needs of cats
- One thing to note is that an adult cat is considerably small in size than a dog and so, the nutrition in a cat food caters to them
So, feeding cat food to your doggy friend isn’t the wisest idea.
Conclusion: Can Dogs Eat Cat Food?
Dogs can eat cat food but, it doesn’t mean they should.
Cat food isn’t toxic to dogs and won’t really have a lot of harmful effects on your pooch. However, cat food is designed to cater the needs of that particular species and won’t provide adequate nutrition for your doggy friend.
So, it is okay if your dog steals your cat’s food once in awhile.
However, don’t make a habit out of sharing—or letting your dog steal your cat’s food!
That’ll only piss the kitty off…
